Office of Labor Standards & Enforcement

San Diego has had several recent news stories about investigations of wage theft and COVID-related paid sick leave violations affecting hundreds of workers. These cases are just the tip of the iceberg, but they affirm the need to protect workers’ rights, hold corporations accountable, and fight for better wages and working conditions for workers.   That is why we have been fighting so hard for Offices of Labor Standards & Enforcement at the City of San Diego and County of San Diego. Now, we need your help to make sure workers really get justice by ensuring these newly formed offices are worker-centered, not industry controlled, and have staff that proactively investigate firms in industries with high rates of violations.

Youth Opportunity Passes

On October 22, 2021, the SANDAG Board voted to approve the Regional Plan Early Action Transit Pilot, allocating $6 million to fund free transit fares for youth 18 and under. This is a huge win for transit-dependent communities!     The pilot program will include improvements on high-demand routes, increases in bus frequency and access to night services on certain lines. All of these changes are part of the 10 Transit Lifelines, a transportation-justice framework created by CPI and our partners in the San Diego Transportation Equity Working Group.

Invest in San Diego Families (ISDF)

On April 6, the Board of Supervisors approved establishing a Budget Equity Assessment Tool. In collaboration with County Supervisor Nora Vargas, CPI helped draft and develop the Budget Equity Assessment policy to embed equity into the County’s budget development process.

The County’s Office of Equity and Racial Justice hosted two community meetings this week to share their progress and get community feedback on the tool. We are looking forward to seeing the impact this tool will have on the upcoming fiscal year 2023 budget cycle!

On October 20th, the San Diego County Independent Redistricting Commission released the first drafts of the new County maps. We have until December 2nd to give input and we need your help to guide the Commission towards the fairest map possible.

If you haven’t yet, please sign up to get more information on how to join us in this important work.

This month, San Diego County made headlines when Amazon announced that they are withdrawing from plans to build a distribution center in El Cajon because of a proposed law to require employers operating on county-owned land to pay their workers livable wages, provide safe and just working conditions, and offer family and worker supporting benefits and protections.
