After 6 weeks of workshops and working on organizing campaigns, the Students for Economic Justice (SEJ) internship came to an end too soon. On August 7th, we hosted a graduation celebrating this year’s SEJ interns. A huge thank you to the United Domestic Workers’ (UDW) for letting us use the community hall to host the graduation. There the interns shared reflections from the summer internship, and the connections they made and hopes for their future organizing in San Diego.
During the SEJ internship, students attended trainings with local labor leaders, community organizers and SEJ alumni where they learned about the art of relationship building, conducting 1:1s, the socio-economic landscape of San Diego, and communications tactics among many other skills to help build their organizing toolbox. Interns had the opportunity to flyer with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), go door knocking with Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), learn more about the history of Chicano Park, outreach to warehouse workers, and phonebank.

This year’s interns were a bright and resourceful group who value connection, intersectionality and uplifting issues in their communities.

With guidance and support from our community partners who hosted the students to work on organizing campaigns, the SEJ interns graduated from our program and will be taking their knowledge and experiences to different parts of San Diego and beyond. Thank you to all our partners that participated in the internship program this summer. We could not have been able to provide the students with hands-on experience without your support!
