Raise wages for San Diego Tourism Workers! CJ's Testimony at SD City Council Cost of Living Committee

June 25, 2025

On June 25, 2025, CPI Researcher & Policy Analyst, CJ Valasek, urged the City of San Diego’s “Select Committee on Addressing the Cost of Living” to support an ordinance to raise wages for tourism workers. The ordinance would raise the minimum wage to $25 an hour for workers at large hotels and venues serving tourists.

As usual, large hotel chains, the Padres, and other business interests came out and opposed paying fair wages to workers. Many of these companies are billion-dollar corporations based out of state, who take the profits while local workers fight just to stay afloat.

We spoke out at the committee meeting alongside hotel workers, and other labor leaders in San Diego, and convinced the committee to move the proposed ordinance forward. The ordinance is now set to be heard at the full City Council this fall.

However, we know the opposition will ramp up their efforts—and we need to do the same.
