Join CPI and our partners in the Invest in San Diego Families (ISDF) coalition in calling on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors to create a public, transparent, and community-oriented process to find the next Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the County.

The County’s Chief Administrative Officer is one of the most important and powerful positions in County government. They create the county budget, implement the policies and programs of the County, and have the power to direct all County staff. You can learn more about the importance of the Chief Administrative Officer here. If San Diegans like us don’t have a voice in this process, we may get a new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) who resists and obstructs, rather than leads the kind of transformation we need in San Diego County government.

We attended the County Board of Supervisors meeting on December 5th to speak on this (listen to our Executive Director’s comments here). Our partners at the ACLU published an article calling for transparency and inclusion of community stakeholders in this process. The Board of Supervisors met in a closed session on Dec 12th and we are awaiting updates. Send an email to the Board of Supervisors let them know that we will not accept conducting this hiring process behind closed doors.

WORKER JUSTICE

Wage Theft Survey

CPI is collaborating with the Center for Community Research and Engagement (CCRE) to conduct a survey on workplace experiences in San Diego. CCRE has been a long-time research partner on major issues such as earned sick days (2020), time theft (2020), and wage theft (2015).

If you are employed in San Diego, please take 5-10 minutes to participate in our brief, anonymous survey. Your input is invaluable in informing policy makers about critical workplace issues.

BUDGET ADVOCACY

City of San Diego

CPI and our partners in the Community Budget Alliance have developed budget priorities for Fiscal Year 2025. If funded, these projects will meet long-standing community needs and help the City of San Diego work towards reversing racial and economic inequities.

We call on the Mayor and City Council to fundamentally change how the City allocates resources and address the long-standing systemic inequities that disproportionately impact people of color and low-income families. We need a budget that is anti-racist, addresses housing insecurity, ends wage theft, mitigates and reverses climate change, and shifts away from over policing to community-based services. In other words, we need a budget that creates an environment where all San Diego residents thrive.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Nancy Jamison Fund for Social Justice

The Nancy Jamison Fund for Social Justice (NJFSJ) seeks to support under-celebrated individuals working towards racial equity and social justice – in any capacity – throughout San Diego county. Honorees receive $50,000 in unrestricted funding to advance their work.

Our Executive Director, Dr. Kyra Greene, serves on the NJFSJ grant committee and helped dream up this program alongside Nancy’s family. Nancy Jamison believed in the power of individuals in our region to make a difference. True to the passion of the fund’s namesake, the NJFSJ celebrates the people behind the work.

We need your help. Every one of you knows someone who is deserving of this recognition and who could benefit from this funding. Please spread the word of the fund and please consider nominating yourself or someone else in your life.

Nominations are accepted through December 30th with grant awards anticipated in March 2024.

New Report on County District 4

Last month we published a report analyzing the most recent ACS Census data (2021 5-year estimates) for County Supervisorial District 4. CPI’s analysis shows that the Board of Supervisors must address child poverty, drastic racial inequities, high rents, and low wages. In the report we talk about severe poverty because the federal poverty thresholds are an inadequate measure to describe who is really struggling in San Diego.
