Poverty rates drop in San Diego, but there are still big inequities by race

 

The region’s poverty rate dropped slightly last year, a study using newly-released census data shows. But it also found significant differences in incomes by race.

The city of San Diego’s poverty rate decreased from 15.6 percent in 2015 to 13.1 percent last year, according to the report by the Center for Policy Initiatives, a think-tank that advocates for working families.

Countywide, 12.3 percent of the population was in poverty last year, a 1.5 percentage point improvement.
