The Center on Policy Initiatives seeks a dynamic, passionate, and experienced individual to join its team as the People Operations Coordinator. This newly created position combines the traditional roles office management, human resources, and administrative assistance to provide organization-wide support in a fast-paced, value-based, collaborative environment.

Founded in 1997, the Center on Policy Initiatives has been at the forefront of the economic justice movement in San Diego. CPI works to increase access to good jobs and to improve conditions for low-wage workers and their families. The organization envisions local government as an effective champion for the common good, and works to enable residents of all communities to have an informed and powerful voice in decisions affecting their quality of life.

CPI’s People Operations helps the people in the organization thrive. The People Operations Coordinator is the operational backbone, touching on HR, recruiting, culture building, and the employee experience. This position serves as a critical thinker and strategic partner, while also being hands-on and detail oriented.

Key Responsibilities:

People Operations Coordinator combines the roles of office management, human resources, and administrative assistance to support the organization’s staff, board, and stakeholders.

 

Recruiting

  • Coordinate the recruitment process and workflow for a variety of open positions.
  • Collaborate with key staff, facilitating the hiring and recruitment process, including maintenance of candidate pipelines and information.
  • Assist hiring committees by conducting pre-screening activities, phone interviews, and skills assessments.
  • Drive the recruitment calendar, scheduling internal meetings and candidate interviews.

Employee Relations

    • Serve as the first touch point to help employees resolve questions and challenges related to technical platforms and resources, employee benefits and compensation, and the organization’s policies and practices.
    • Execute people operations programs including but not limited to benefits, leave, performance reviews, occupational health and safety standards, and compliance training.
    • Lead employee on-boarding, review, and exiting processes, orienting employees to the organization’s values and mission.

Office, Facilities and Virtual Environment

    • Lead on the creation of a welcoming environment for everyone at CPI. 
    • Assist in the planning and execution of office closures for holidays and breaks.

Administrative Support

    • Provide staff with assistance with and orientation to CPI’s organizational tools and resources, cultivating accessible trainings and documentation as necessary.
    • Prepare leadership for meetings and presentations by creating and presenting pre-meeting briefs and post-meeting de-briefs, collecting, and organizing necessary documents and information, and creating issue and/or individual dossiers.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Applicants must demonstrate (through their cover letter or work experience) a commitment to racial and economic justice and the labor movement. Also needed: willingness to work occasional long hours and weekends when necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2 to 3 years combination experience in a Human Resources and/or Office Management role.
    Previous experience in application of Human Resources policies, labor laws, and employment practices.
  • Strong command of the English language, both written and verbal, and the ability to interact positively with all levels within the organization including board members, donors, community partners, and peers.
  • Advanced proficiency and experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Prior experience with cloud-based employee databases or human resources information systems (HRIS).
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to think and act proactively, manage ambiguity, and prioritize their own work, as well as the work of executive level staff.
  • Experience exercising discretion and confidentiality with sensitive company information.
  • Demonstrated abilities to operate within a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment, calmly while under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible in the face of changing, and sometimes conflicting, priorities.
  • Sense of humor and ability to have fun!

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish – advanced fluency.
  • Previous experience supporting recruitment and employee onboarding processes.
  • Previous experience in a non-profit, political, or governmental setting.
  • Previous experience supporting executives and/or directors, in an executive assistant role.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based employee databases or human resources information systems (HRIS) such as ADP, Paychex, Gusto, Calamari, Zenefits or similar.
  • Reliable transportation for the conducting of official business.

Salary and Benefits: CPI’s salary and benefit standards are competitive and reflect our commitment to economic justice and equal pay for equal work. The salary range for this position is between $64,480 and $74,450 per year. We offer a full benefits package including employer-paid health, vision, and dental insurance, 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution, and a generous paid time-off program including paid sick, vacation, and holidays.
