The Center on Policy Initiatives is an independent nonprofit that has been at the forefront of the fight for economic justice in San Diego since 1997. We are the San Diego County people’s think tank. We conduct research, generate policy solutions, advance leadership development, and then build alliances to win policies that benefit working families and diverse communities. 

Position Overview
The Communications Team is the backbone of the Center on Policy Initiatives’ (CPI) fight for policy solutions that improve the lives of workers, Black, Indigenous, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Latinx people and other oppressed or underrepresented communities. We are seeking a compassionate, skilled, flexible communications professional who shares the values of the organization to join this incredible team. 

Our ideal candidate has the ability to create powerful, clear, and strategic messages and to disseminate them effectively using a wide range of communications tools and technologies. We seek an individual with a deep commitment to economic and racial justice, who is motivated to do great work, take initiative, and is skillful at working collaboratively.


  • Produce and edit social media posts, graphics, talking points, statements to the press, and op-eds attributed to CPI. 
  • Edit research reports, issue briefs, fact sheets, policy memos and other CPI materials for public dissemination. 
  • Develop strategic and cohesive messages and communications for campaigns and programs.
  • Develop digital organizing campaigns in collaboration with the organizing team.
  • Develop and pitch stories to mainstream and independent news media.
  • Plan and execute press conferences and other media events. 
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key reporters, editors, and producers locally and nationally. 

Preferred Qualifications:
CPI is open to a wide range of candidate experience for these roles. The qualifications listed in this section are not all required, nor are they exhaustive of the skills that would lead someone to be successful in the position. 

  • Ability to develop and implement strategic communications plans, craft messages, and produce clear, compelling communications materials.  
  • Experience with websites, social media, and emerging media platforms, and an understanding of communications technology trends. 
  • Ability to cultivate relationships with reporters and journalists. 
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish.
  • Knowledge of CRM’s, e-mail databases, and fund-raising software applications (specifically NGP-VAN, EveryAction, or similar). 
  • Experience working in the labor movement, with a labor organizing/advocacy organization or with a social justice advocacy organization. 

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of communications and media work. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial and economic justice and the needs and concerns of working people and diverse communities.
  • Ability to proactively problem-solve and generate ideas, especially under deadline pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Availability and willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends. 

Salary and Benefits: CPI’s salary and benefit standards are competitive and reflect our commitment to economic justice and equal pay for equal work. The salary range for this position is between $65,748 and $78,075 per year. We offer a full benefits package including employer-paid health, vision, and dental insurance, 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution, and a generous paid time-off program including paid sick, vacation, and holidays.
