FIGHTING FOR A PEOPLE'S BUDGET
CPI has a long history of advocating for equitable public investments that will increase community wealth, health and justice for all, especially for communities of color. We envision a San Diego where the budgets and budget processes are transparent, accessible, and give communities decision-making power, while ensuring government responsibility and accountability. Together with partners, CPI advocates for an equitable People’s Budget at the City and County of San Diego through our two budget coalitions: Community Budget Alliance (CBA) and Invest in San Diego Families (ISDF).
Community Budget Alliance (CBA)
In 2021, the Community Budget Alliance (CBA) completed its 9th year of budget advocacy. For over six months, CPI and our partners in the CBA developed the FY22 People’s Budget for the City of San Diego and launched a panel series to increase community engagement. We are proud of and grateful to everyone who has participated in the FY22 budget process. While we are frustrated that the City of San Diego failed to reduce the police department’s budget and to invest in alternatives to policing like non-police emergency response and youth violence prevention programs, we are also encouraged by the many CBA budget priorities that were incorporated in this year’s budget.
Invest in San Diego Families (ISDF)
It was a historic year of success for the Invest in San Diego Families (ISDF) coalition and our advocacy at the County of San Diego. With a new majority of county supervisors committed to fighting for low-income workers, for the first time in decades, we have an opportunity for countywide change. We were able to reach more people as a coalition and increased our ability to educate people about the importance of the county and its budget. More than 1900 people participated in the budget process and advocated for equity this year. Thank you to everyone who took action!
